Hyper-local news & culture
No algorithm. Just word of mouth.
left917 is the High Country's independent read: local news, music, culture, and what's on, all in one place. No app, no login, no ads. And we're writing our own stuff now, not just rounding up everyone else's. Putting on an event? Share your calendar and we'll keep it on the air. Saw a flyer for something that isn't here? Running all October
The High Country Haint List. Haunted trails, ghost tours and a live Rocky Horror shadowcast. Everything spooky between here and Oct. 31, updated as the flyers go up. Read it →
Send it to one person. Know someone in the High Country who'd go to a show, a council meeting, or a Saturday market if they knew about it? Text them left917.net. Everything here is built to be passed hand to hand, and one text is how the dial gets wider. That's the whole ask.
Voting Nov. 3? Registration closes Fri, Oct. 9, at 5pm. Dates, early-voting sites, ID rules and a sample-ballot lookup, all on one page.
Dry so far, but this is the mountains and the sky never signs a contract. Showers are still 80% likely, a quarter to half an inch by tonight, so pack a jacket and keep an eye west. The High Country Honey Festival in Ashe runs 9am to 5pm rain or shine, with vendors inside the new Agriculture Expo Center and a free honey tasting bar. At 11am, the WKSK old-time and bluegrass show goes live and free at the Ashe Civic Center with the Crooked Road Ramblers. In Lansing, the Ola Belle Reed Festival runs noon to 5pm with the Nick & Brew and Sheets Family bands, two sets each. At 2pm, the Appalachian Autumn Market and Fall Festival at Hickory Ridge History Museum has apple butter, blacksmithing, pumpkin painting, a costume contest and hatchet throwing, free to get in.
Want a roof over you? The Met's Così Fan Tutte plays in HD at the App Theatre at 1pm. Tonight at 10pm, No Visa with Alec Lomami brings its dance party to Lily's Snack Bar for $5.
The Haint List keeps growing, every Halloween thing we could find in the High Country, through Oct. 31. Tell us what we missed.
